Maps & Property Records for the O'Brien and Mulqueeny Family in Kilfarboy Parish, County Clare, Ireland

The earliest document that is available for genealogical research in the Parish of Kilfarboy in County Clare, Ireland is the TITHE COMPOSITION BOOK of 1825.

This is a record of a tax or tithe to the Protestant church in the parish.  Listed are the occupiers of the land in 1825.  Here we find John O'Brien & Partners holding 12 acres of land in the Townland of Kilfarboy.  Also listed just above the name of John O'Brien is Pat Malone and Mulqueeny (mountain) 70 acres.

I will assume that this is the connection between the O'Brien and Mulqueeny families.

Not all the present day Townlands are listed in the Tithe Composition Books of 1825.  In the 1830's there was an extensive survey of land done over the entire island of Ireland and every acre of land was surveyed and drawn on a map of 6 inches to a mile.  These are called the 1842 Ordinance Survey Maps.  A few years after these maps were drawn the Great Irish Famine swept the country and families poured out of Ireland or died of starvation and most of the farms were consolidated into larger and more profitable farms for the convenience of the land-lord.

In this record of 1825 there are townlands in todays parish that are not listed.  The townland of Drumaun, Miltown Malbay is not listed.

The following map is of Drumaun Townland in 1842.  The land is adjacent to Kilfarboy Townland.  The land that hi-lighted in yellow is land where the Mulqueeny and O'Brien families were living when the Tithe Applotment Books listed them in Kilfarboy Townland.

I now believe that the O'Brien and Mulqueeny family  were occupiers of land in Drumaun Townland.

In 1855 in County Clare there was a set books printed called the General Valuation of Rateable Property in Ireland.  In this book were listings of  all the Occupiers of land, Immediate Lessors, Description of Tenements, Acres,  and Valuation of property.  At this time there was another set of maps which now detailed the townland's name and showing the boundaries of the individual farms and the townland and parishes boundaries.

This record shows that the O'Brien's and Mulqueeny families were living on lot #1 in Drumaun Townland with 100 acres.

This is the map that shows the townland and individual farm boundaries.  The numbers on the map correspond with the numbered farms in the 1855 Valuation Books.

I have colored farm #6 in the adjacent townland of Illaunbaun on this map because the O'Brien's were neighbors to my maternal family ancestral family the Conoles of llaumbaun.   The Conole's also made their way to Buffalo, New York.
